Hans Werner Henze - Berliner Philharmoniker - 5 Symphonies
Media Condition: Near Mint (NM or M-)
Sleeve Condition: Very Good Plus (VG+)
Nice copy!
Notes:
Gatefold sleeve Note by the composer in French, English and German, taken from a lecture given at the Technische Universität Berlin on 28 January 1963. Tempo designations differ slightly between the cover and the label; I have followed the cover. Titles are in English on the jacket cover, but in German on the label. I have followed the cover. Titles also differ slightly. "Previously released as DG 139 203 / 204." The record's source is PRS Hannover, as shown by the 320 in the runout, the sideways arranged stamper letters and the colourless embossed stamp "PRS Hannover" on the sleeve, verso. I'm confident in assigning a release date of 1984 because (a) that was the year I bought the set, in the UK; (b) the date is confirmed by the inner sleeve numbers (4912 000 1532.1 26.84 O, 4912 000 1532.1 30.84 O), which at least establish 1984 as a terminus ante quem; and (c) the discs cannot in any case have been issued later than the end of 1985, since in January 1986 PRS Hannover, "with both [its plants and all respective vinyl and CD manufacturing and distribution activities," was transferred to PDO, Germany (Philips And DuPont Optical GmbH). "The Five Symphonies of Hans Werner Henze have been recorded in accordance with the conducting schools (published by B. Schott's Söhne, Mainz) which, in the cases of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Symphonies, do not entirely agree with the study scores (Edition Schott Nos. 4402, 4567 and 5034). Apart from alterations included in the printed conducting scores, these also contain manuscript revisions by the composer. The present recordings are therefore to be regarded as presenting final and authentic versions."
